Another day in the -- for lack of a better word -- life

 September 16, 2026

Ugh.
Slog.
Grumble.
Another day begins.
Listening for the sound of the sprinklers
Traffic in the distance
As one by one
Garage doors release into the world
Their worker drones
A steady stream of
Responsible adults
Trickle into the tributaries
Of traffic on these rural routes
Into the mighty river of
Lava, slowing as it condenses
Nearer to its destination
One becomes five
Five becomes fifty
Then a hundred
A thousand
Who knows?
Meanwhile, I sit at home
A boulder, unpropelled
I hardened long ago
Into this immovable lump of granite
Lying on my bed
Shifting to avoid the pain and
Discomfort of my
Simmering indifference
I don’t wanna
I don’t wanna
I don’t wanna
Resentment bubbles in the pot
No amount of mental gymnastics
Will convince me that there is
Virtue in work
And reward in conscripted servitude
I would choose cheesecake
Couch and TV
Sleeping until three
Never getting up to pee
Or brush my teeth
No lawnmowing
No laundry
No vacuuming for me.
Were it not for the inescapable
Accumulation of entropy’s debris
Dead skin, dust and mold
Making my wallow less than ideal
I know – I’ll discover new ways
To slack
A hammock on the back deck
Where I can
Swing and sway gently
As I shed my DNA
To hungry, waiting bacteria
Damn!
I said the word “hungry,” and now
I am reminded that I’m still alive
And this sentient machine
The unbidden body requires sustenance
Even to remain at idle in
Minimal effort mode
And the cats need feeding as well
Hell
Well, at least they don’t seem to
Feel guilt about having a decidedly
Less enthusiastic agenda than I
Content to sleep away the day
Between meals and pooping
Not even venturing outside when
The door is wide open
When did they lose that spirit
Of adventure, I wonder?

I've changed my comments settings to allow for anyone to comment. All comments are welcome, even spineless potshots from anonymous posters. Please, by all means, give me the tongue lashing I so richly deserve. I promise not to hunt you down and melt your keyboard with my plasma cannon. I won't, however, promise not to pout and make that face you can't stand.
